India has strongly condemned Pakistan for extending hospitality to fugitive preacher Zakir Naik, emphasizing that such actions reflect Pakistan’s stance on sheltering individuals wanted by Indian authorities. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue during his weekly press briefing, highlighting Naik’s recent meetings with former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
When asked about India’s stance on Naik’s reception in Pakistan, Jaiswal remarked, “This is not the first time he has been treated in Pakistan. It shows the kind of approach his hosts have and what it means for us, in terms of giving so much support to a person who is wanted here.”
According to The Express Tribune, Naik met Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz at their Raiwind residence on March 18. While details of their conversation remain undisclosed, the meeting has sparked controversy.
Meanwhile, former Pakistani cricketer Mohammad Hafeez has also faced backlash for meeting Naik and sharing photos from their interaction on social media. His post, captioned “Pleasure meeting with Zakir Naik,” drew criticism, particularly from Indian social media users, with some citing it as a reason for strained India-Pakistan relations in sports.
Naik, wanted in India on charges of alleged money laundering and inciting extremism, has been a subject of diplomatic tensions. Last year, on October 24, 2024, Reverend Azad Marshall, President Bishop of the Synod of the Church of Pakistan, raised concerns over Naik’s remarks about the Christian community during his visit to Pakistan as a state guest. In a letter to Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, Marshall urged action against statements that could incite religious discord.
India has repeatedly sought Naik’s extradition, but his presence in Pakistan further complicates diplomatic relations between the two nations.
